- Communal housing

Our team proposed a community-driven housing system for the immigrant neighborhoods in Tensta, Stockholm, addressing their need for housing and neighorhood’s agency. We took inspiration from Stockholm’s history of prefab flying panels and proposed a system with reusable steel scaffolds and CLT panels to transform underutilized parking lots into social housing and social hubs.

Our system comprises a steel scaffold, a menu of housing units, and a menu of social hubs that can be tailored and composed to fit different neighborhoods' diverse conditions. The steel scaffold adapts to different parking lots’ sizes and orientations, ensuring accessibility for all configurations. The housing units maximize southern sunlights and can accommodate the common household sizes in Tensta. The social hub menu includes a range of essential social amenities for Tensta, and communities can choose and reorganize based on their demands.

Our design approach is informed by a thorough study of local demands. We researched the patterns of circulation and gathering among different age groups, as well as the social services and housing typologies in demand. By responding to local demands with a systematic approach, we offer a sustainable and customizable housing system solution to the challenges facing immigrant neighborhoods in Tensta, Stockholm. By empowering communities to shape their own living spaces, we hope to create more inclusive and vibrant neighborhoods that meet the diverse needs of their residents.
