Our relationship with nature and microbes forever changed in 2020 when Covid-19 enforced global lockdowns. The event truly invited us to reconsider the natural environment through microscale and consider the agency of bacterias in our surroundings. Cyanobacteria is one of the first photosynthetic organisms on our planet, producing more than half of the oxygen we breathe. While being the most experienced/unique organisms in the world, it lives in the most neglected spaces in our built environment. We believe it is important to build an experiential connection with one of nature’s most fundamental organisms in this increasingly virtual, fast-paced world. Through the use of a mobile device, users will be able to affect the growth of cyanobacteria using a sun-like LED light and receive audio feedback as the bacteria grow and migrate. The device encourages users to adapt to the pace of the bacteria’s response, interpret the variations in sound, and connect with the cyanobacteria in a visceral way that cannot be explained literally.
